Extended Practice for Assistant Practitioners in Mammography

This module is for Assistant Practitioner Mammographers (Mammography Associates) who are currently working in a clinical environment within mammography services and want to develop their clinical knowledge and technique of advanced mammographic views.   

The qualification is essential for Assistant Practitioners working within Breast Imaging Services to develop clinical sills as well as knowledge and understanding of advanced mammography views. The course is run in partnership with the Scottish Academy of Breast Imaging (SABI) based at the West of Scotland Breast Screening Centre in Glasgow. Learners must be employed within a breast imaging department offering the relevant clinical experience. 

You will be guided through the module by academic and clinical staff, a named SABI Clinical Trainer and Workplace Mentor who will support with:

  • academic and clinical learning relevant to the module content;
  • academic writing and the written assessment; and
  • clinical assessment, the ePortfolio and reflective writing. 

This course is suitable for Assistant Practitioner Mammographers (Mammography Associates) who have experience working in the Mammography setting, acquiring CC and MLO projections. Development of knowledge and understanding of advanced mammography skills will typically amount to 200 hours of study. Module assessment will take the form of a written case study and ePortfolio of clinical evidence. The module will be completed in seven months. 

Structure: This is a single module which can be completed as CPD. 

Duration: This course is delivered over a 7-month period from May - December

Delivery: The academic element of the course is delivered via a 4-day online academic block. You will also attend the West of Scotland Breast Screening Centre in Glasgow for half a week of one-to-one clinical skills development with a named SABI Clinical Trainer.  

Outcomes: 20 credits at SCQF level 8

Teaching, learning and assessment: The course starts with a 4-day online academic block via Canvas consisting of live workshops, academic support seminars offering guidance for the academic and clinical assessments, as well as self-directed learning. You will also attend the West of Scotland Breast Screening Centre in Glasgow for a half week of clinical training with a named SABI Clinical Trainer where you will be supported through the development of clinical skills and be given clinical assessment and ePortfolio guidance. 

You will then have seven months to develop your clinical skills with the support of a named Workplace Mentor. During this time your SABI Clinical Trainer will come to your own clinical department to carry out the clinical assessment. 

The module assessment includes a written case study and ePortfolio of clinical evidence as well as a number of formative activities. 

 

Entry requirements: Applicants must have a HECert Mammography qualification or equivalent. Current employment in a clinical environment offering relevant mammography experience with the support of a line manager and workplace mentor is also essential.

International: You will be required to provide evidence of English language competence at IELTS 7 (no less than 6.5 in any element) or equivalent.
